FRONT 242 - no comment mlp 1985

Front 242 was created in 1980 by Daniel B (Daniel Bressanutti) and Dirk Bergen. After a few singles, Jean-Luc De Meyer (vocals) and Patrick Codenys joined the group and the first album, "Geography", was released. At this stage, Dirk Bergen left the group to become their manager. In 1983, Richard 23 (Richard Jonckheere) joined the group as vocalist/percussionist. With this line-up, the band released many albums of EBM, gaining more popularity with every release. (EBM stands for Electronic Body Music, a term invented by F242 themselves) They also established a solid live reputation, with an energetic show in para-military outfits. The year 1993 brought a radical change in style, with guest musicians, the disappearance of their military look and the exploration of both harder (guitar samples) and softer (female vocals, ambient) sounds. After many years of silence, except for a few live/remix-albums, Front 242 re-appeared in the spotlight in the late nineties with their Re:boot-tour, bringing modern, techno-like cover versions of their own songs. In 2003 they took a step back towards their EBM-roots, with the release of "Pulse" and "Still & Raw

BREEDING GROUND - happy i know'' 7'' 1986

Breeding Ground was formed in Toronto in 1981 and subscribed to the cold wave mould of acts like New Order's school of rhythm. Their first release was an untitled 4 song 12" EP in 1982 on Mannequin Records and featured original drummer Ken Jones.

They would receive notoriety with the independent 12" single "Reunion"/"Slaughter" in 1983 on Fringe. It was quite successful at college radio stations and ended up selling out three pressings.

The follow-up LP, 1986's 'Tales Of Adventure', was produced by ex-Blue Peter guitarist Chris Wardman (who later joined the band for a short period) enlisting the help of Alta Moda singer Molly Johnson and Jason Sniderman on keyboards. The record made it to No.1 on the campus charts and No.60 on CFNY's "Best 86 of '86" based on the success of the single and video for "Happy Now I Know".

.Cancer Barrack was founded in 1987 after the split of CALLING DEAD RED ROSES. The music is described as Gothic-Rock, influenced by bands like BAUHAUS, KILLING JOKE, THE DANSE SOCIETY, CHRISTIAN DEATH... etc. While the 2 instrumentalists of CALLING DEAD RED ROSES, Hauke Harms and Thomas Lücke founded GIRLS UNDER GLASS, the singer of CDRR (Torsten Hammann) met the other 4 guys (Henning Lamp'l, Andreas Klatt, Thorsten Cichowski and Axel Ermes) to found CANCER BARRACK. Till their split-up in 1993 the band only released 2 albums ("Walking Through The Cancer Barrack" and "Leben") plus some Singles, EPs and a "Best Of..." but was well-known in the Gothic scene. Excessive and powerfull concerts in which singer and frontman Torsten Hammann when necessary threw out some people from the audience because they didn't "behave right" made them become an attractive live-band.... In 2008 a band called SCARLETT claims to be the lawful heir of Cancer Barrack. This is bullshit!!! It's a cheap attempt to defraud by a guy who once was a live bass-player for Cancer Barrack for only 6 months... The real Cancer Barrack repudiates in strongest terms any connection to this new band. CANCER BARRACK died in 1993 and there will never be a follow up...

it began one night in melbourne, in 1984, as a jam session with mark valentine on bass, mark amis on vocals, and myself(barry norton) on keyboards/drum programs. we recorded two songs that we had written that night, and this was the start of 'fact or fear', the first incarnation of 'three years in tibet'. this style of music was very different to me. it was dark, brooding, ambient...and above all, experimental. we made music out of anything, we just tweaked it a bit.

from 1984-86,mark amis and i wrote and recorded around 50 or 60 songs,with our crowning achievment, the release of the lp 'brittle branches'in 1985. this record was given airplay on several florida college radio stations,wfit in melbourne played it regularly.it was available in many major record stores all over central and east coast florida in 85-86. also through a friend of mark amis who is in british radio, several copies of the lp was sent to england, and we were told later that it was well liked and given airplay .i recently talked to mark, and he told me a record collector had contacted him and purchased all his remaining copies . also i would like to mention mark valentine, who has been in guest spots in our recordings on his trusty bass, and deserves credit for composing several bass lines which are the backbone of this style of music, and also vig, for several colaborations with mark and i on music projects in the tyit tradition.

MUNCH - munch 12' lp 1988

Munch formed in Kristiansand, Norway, in 1986, with the name taken from the famous Norwegian painter Edward Munch. They wanted to create a kind of music that made the same impressions as Munch's paintings...
Of the five members only two knew how to play instruments, but this was just in the vein of what leader Ivar Mykland wanted: Start from scratch, then you'll have to concentrate on how your instruments sounds, have to concentrate to recognize sound patterns which highly skilled musicians will pass on as uninteresting.

They started practicing in a sound proof room at Ivar's place, in Tordenskjoldsgt.23, N-4612 Kristiansand S. As time went on this rehearsal studio was transformed into a proper studio and eventually the location of their own label T23.

Due to this very basic start the process of writing songs took lots of time, in five years they wrote something like 25 songs. But Ivar express satisfaction with the way Munch was formed and how they developed: Like Einstürzende Neubauten Munch could write a song based on random sounds or accidents - like when Ivar had caught a cold and was coughing or if one of them played a wrong sound.

Munch split up after their concert at Rockefeller, in Oslo, on December 6 1991.

The Danse Society were a positive punk group from Barnsley, England, active from 1981 to 1986.
Their line-up was: Steve Rawlings (voice), Paul Nash (guitar), Lyndon Scarfe (keyboards) up to January 1985 then replaced by David Whittaker, Tim Wright (bass) and Paul Gilmartin (drums).

In 1981 they released their first Single on their own imprint Society Records.
After various successful releases which where doing well in the Independent Charts their most popular Album, 'Heaven is Waiting', was released February 1984 via Arista.

Various hassles with Arista and the mainstream public during 1985 led to a cancelled follow up LP, the departure of Lyndon Scarfe and new recordings for the final Album 'Looking Through' which was released August 1986 back again on Society Records.
Singer Stephen Rawlings reappeared with a new band in 1987 simply called Society with one single; "Saturn Girl".
Rawlings then continued to pursue his path in music with the electronic act Meridian Dream.
While the other band members toured as Johnny In The Clouds with new Singer Mark Copson from Music For Pleasure but without releasing any more material before calling it a day.
Out of their Managment and Label grew Big Life Records.

They are planning to release a new album in 2011.

NIGHTMARES IN WAX - black leather 12' 1985

Less a band than a training ground for a variety of Liverpudlian wannabes, Nightmares in Wax released only one EP during its brief existence, but that sole release was unforgettable. Neither did the band truly die, rather it evolved into the even more memorable Dead or Alive. Singer Pete Burns already had one failed group behind him when he formed Nightmares in Wax. The Mystery Girls also included Pete Wylie, Julian Cope, and Phil Hurst, and managed to play their first and final show on the same night. That gig, opening for Sham 69 at Liverpool's legendary punk club Eric's, took place on November 4, 1977. The group folded immediately after, with the members going their separate ways....

XMAL DEUTSCHLAND - sickle moon 12' 1987

Xmal Deutschland formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1980, initially as an all-girl band, consisting of by Anja Huwe (Vocals), Manuela Rickers (Guitar), Fiona Sangster (Keyboards), Rita Simon (Bass) and Caro May (Drums) A year later they released their first single "Großstadtindianer" on Alfred Hilsberg’s Zickzack label. The band also contributed the to the label compilation "Lieber Zuviel Als Zuwenig". Around this time Bassist Rita Simon was replaced by Wolfgang Ellerbrock. In 1982 the band released the classic "Incubus Succubus". That same year, Drummer Caro May was replaced by Manuela Zwingmann. While German audiences were less than receptive at first, a UK tour opening for the Cocteau Twins resulted in a label deal with 4AD Records. Their debut album "Fetisch" (1983) and the singles "Qual" and "Incubus Succubus II" all made the UK Independent charts, even though the band used German lyrics. Manuela Zwingmann left the band one year later, replaced by Peter Bellendir. This lineup proved to be the longest running. 1984 saw the release of the single "Reigen" and the album Tocsin, followed by a world tour through to 1985. 1986 saw the release of "Matador", produced by Hugh Cornwell of Stranglers, The. Xmal Deutschland also opened for The Stranglers at a concert at Wembley Stadium in London. Their follow-up album, "Viva" was recorded in Hamburg and was released in 1987, followed by the single "Sickle Moon". After the release of "Viva", Manuela Rickers, Fiona Sangster and Peter Bellendir left the group. Anja Huwe and Wolfgang Ellerbrock continued to work with Frank Z. Abwärts on Guitar. Producer Henry Staroste played Keyboards, and German studio Drummer Curt Cress completed the line-up that would record the 1989 LP "Devils" and the singles "Dreamhouse" and "I’ll Be Near You". The LP showed a change of direction towards mainstream pop and this proved to be the last release from X Mal Deutschland, 1990 saw a few scattered live appearances, though the group soon split up.

The Comsat Angels were a post-punk band from Sheffield and Doncaster, England, active from 1978 to 1995.[1] Their music has been described as "abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache."[2] They have been credited as being an influence to current post-punk revival bands, such as Blacklist, Editors and Interpol.[3] The Comsat Angels toured heavily in the UK and in western Europe, especially in The Netherlands. They also toured the United States twice.[4] Their music has been extensively reissued and recompiled since 1995 by various record labels.

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry started properly in 1982, led by Chris Reed (mastermind and front man), as a vehicle to express his own particular intense and angst-ridden vision.

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry make their first demo and are immediately offered recording deals. They release their first single in the same year - "Beating my Head" - and begin to build up a live following in the UK...

John Peel takes to the band and they become one of his favourites. They record Radio sessions for him and go on to release a chain of explosive cult-alternative hit singles.

Red Lorry music rapidly earned a reputation as mind blowing powerful guitar music, something not so many other bands were making in such an unashamed way.

The reputation and records of the Band reach Europe and they go public in 1983-1984 with small tours of Belgium, Germany, France and Holland.

In 1984 the band releases its first album - "Talk about the Weather" - which is received with great critical acclaim.

Meanwhile over in the USA the people were starting to get hip to the Lorries. March 1985 sees the band being invited for their first dates in America. The Band plays a handful of US East Coast shows to find they have become total Cult figures, playing New York's Danceteria Club to a packed concert hall 2 times in the same week.

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry have returned to the scene to pummel their way into your consciousness once again!

With one eye on the past and one eye on the future the band are currently working on material for a new Album. They've been warming up with a hand full of gigs last year - Leeds Cockpit, Headlining Whitby Goth Festival, Metamatik Festival (Italy), Mera Luna Festival (Germany) and Camden Underworld.

Born John Denver Stanley, Dublin 1960, Stano grew up in Artane and showed no inclination towards a 'musical' career as a child. Attending the local Christian brothers school and then the technical college, his first choice of lifestyle was that of the army. After five months there he settied down to become a carpenter But Stano had always been a non-conformist. His early schooldays had been chequered by a rebellious streak and at the tech. he had been noticed for his distinctive writing abiiities. Even though an avid fan of Bob Dylan's, it wasn't until punk happened that Stano took an active interest in rock music. During the late seventiff!early eighties, Stano hung around the Dublin punk scene, went to gigs, and befriended Johnny 'Rotten' Lydon of The Sex Pistols, who then often came to Ireland to get away from the hustle and bustle of London's whirligig music business. Stimulated by the energy of punk, Stano teamed up with Dublin combo The Threat and started to play synthesiser. Purveyors of a gritty ultrarealist sound their first single 'Lullaby in C'l'High Cost of Living, (Web 1980) was well received and made British radio airplay. Like a lot of groups of the punk period they didn't stay the course and broke up after a short time....

THE LORRIES - crawling mantra ep' 12' 1987

The band was formed by guitarist/songwriter Chris Reed and vocalist Mark Sweeney, along with bassist Steve Smith and drummer Mick Brown (who would later join The Mission). Sweeney left the band in late 1981 and Reed permanently took over as vocalist, with Martin Fagan joining as a second guitarist. The group's sound, featuring a numbing guitar drone, powerfully throbbing drums, and Reed's cavernous vocal tones, caused the Lorries (as their fans came to call them) to be quickly lumped into the then-developing gothic rock scene by pop journalists, although the band themselves preferred to cite Wire as an influence.[1]

In 1982, the Lorries' manager Dave Hall provided independent record label Red Rhino with a cassette of the group's demos.[2] Impressed by the quality of the songs, Red Rhino label head "Tony K" (Tony Kostrzewa)[3] signed the band and immediately released Beating My Head unchanged from the demo as the band's debut single.

Before forming Incubus Succubus, Tony McKormack (guitar) was in the horror punk band Screaming Dead from 1980 to 1985. McKormack, Candia Ridley (vocals) and Adam Henderson (bass) then formed a band called Belas Knapp, which they shortly changed to Incubus Succubus. From the outset the band had a very strong neo-pagan orientation. The first single, "Beltaine", and a matching EP, were recorded in 1989, as was the original version of the first album, "Belladonna And Aconite".[2] The line-up listed on the sleeve of the 7" Beltaine single is: Candia - Vocals, Tony McKormack - Guitars/Vocals, Adam Henderson - Bass, Jamie Gardner - Keyboards, Bob Gardener - Drums. However when the first pressing of the EP came back warped, several members left the band.........
